OUR HISTORY
The Amherst Firefighters Association was incorporated under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia on April 4, 1974.
The AFFA started a weekly bingo game with help from the Knights of Columbus. This proved to be quite successful. Over the ensuing years, the AFFA not only paid off that original pledge, but also contributed to several additions to the Amherst Fire Department building, apparatus and equipment.
The Amherst Fire Department was organized in 1883. Around 1970, the firefighters pledged $150,000 to the Town towards the construction of a new fire station, which was the catalyst for that project.
The AFFA has also been very involved in the community, raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy, Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society, Cumberland Health Care Centre, Minor Hockey, Little League Baseball, Sea Cadets and many other worthy causes over the years.
